BLACK GIRL KNIT CLUB
BIO
Black Girl Knit Club (BGKC) is a knitwear collective based in East London started by friends Sicgmone & Vea. Created in January 2019 after the realisation that there wasn’t a safe space for women who looked like the pair in the craft industry. They were further motivated after following the recent social media hashtag #diversknitty, where knitwear designers and makers were calling for more diversity within the craft community. Thus the women wanted to change that narrative for the community of the next generation and then became Black Girl Knit Club.
The aim is to create an inclusive space for black women and women of colour to gather, unite, and inspire each other through developing the confidence of hand knitting skills and in turn create a learning platform that highlights the importance of creativity in our community. In addition, the hope is to empower the next generation especially in the pair’s community by hosting monthly workshops, talks and collaborating with other British owned small businesses.
